Badie Khaleghian was commissioned by Liza Stepanova to compose Tahirih: The Pure for a premiere at the San Francisco Center for New Music. This piano solo was performed on December 1st, 2017.
Composed in three movements, The Day of Alast, Unchained, and Badasht, Tahirih: The Pure musically tells the story of Tahirih, one of Letters of the Living and a prominent figure in 19th century Middle-Eastern history. She is the exemplar of women’s strength in Iran. At a time when most women were kept illiterate, she became a great poet, teacher, leader, and activist.
