The Newkind Festival: An Immersive Conference About Social Action

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Erfan Daliri, a Baha’i living in Australia who’s an educator, author, event director and an internationally toured spoken word artist. I had heard Erfan’s ‘Unfazed‘ performance at the Sydney Theatre Company, and when I got to meet him, he told me all about an awesome new initiative he had started called the Newkind Festival, an immersive six day conference in Tasmania, Australia, that brings together thought leaders, innovators, pioneers and inspirational speakers from around the world to build capacity, and inspire participants to make a positive impact on society.

The Five Year Plan 2011-2016: Summary of Achievements and Learning has recently been launched as a free digital publication. Prepared under the supervision of the International Teaching Centre, this helpful document charts the development of the Baha’i worldwide community and it illustrates examples of the new culture Baha’is are developing around the world. It shares, among many other themes, what we have learned about releasing the potential of youth, enhancing institutional capacity, and establishing Houses of Worship. It discusses developments at the Baha’i World Centre, social action initiatives and instances where Baha’is have participated in the discourses of society.

A Personal Reflection on Social Action

In 2010 the Universal House of Justice called the Baha’is of the world to reflect on the contributions that their growing vibrant communities make to the material and spiritual progress of society and one of these contributions is social action. If we imagine the Baha’i community as a fire, social action is one of its properties: released heat.
