Baha’i Blog’s Top 10 Image Posts of the Year!

To celebrate Baha’i Blog’s 7th birthday, we recently posted our 10 most popular articles of the year, and now we thought it would be a good time to share our 10 most popular Image posts of the year as well!

What do we mean by “Image posts”? Well, Baha’i Blog has an Article Section, a Video Section, an Audio Section, and about two years ago we launched our Image Section, where we feature photos, wallpapers, design, art and other imagery from talented Baha’i creators. (You can find out more about our Image Section by reading this article.)

In this top 10 countdown, we list the top 10 posts with the most amount of traffic from Naw-Ruz 2017 to Naw-Ruz 2018 based on Google Analytics. Let’s start with number 10:

#10 The House of Worship and Baha’is of Ashkhabad

It’s always fascinated me that the very first Baha’i House of Worship (Mashriqu’l-Adhkar) no longer exists. Built in the city of Ashkhabad in modern day Turkmenistan, the House of Worship enjoyed only a brief 20 year history before it was relinquished to the hands of the Soviet authorities. It was later destroyed following one of the deadliest earthquakes in modern history, with tremors so severe that some estimates suggest almost two thirds of the city’s population perished.

The story of how this House of Worship came to be, and what was accomplished in those twenty years by one of the earliest Baha’i communities is fascinating. What’s more, there are many photos remaining in existence. We’ve compiled some of these images, along with a little bit of the story behind this foundational Baha’i community. #9 The Exquisite and Joyful World of Shirin Sahba

Shirin Sahba’s artwork makes me positively giddy. I could look at it all day long! I was lovingly gifted one of her prints (which you’ll see below, it’s the one titled “Flora + Fauna”) and I put it in our bedroom so it would be one of the first things I see in the morning and one of the last before I close my eyes at night.

Shirin Sahba’s work has made subtle appearances on Baha’i Blog a couple of times. For one, her art is the stunning cover of Luke Slott’s album Year of the Nightingale and he talks about the process of commissioning and working with Shirin in Episode 11 of the Baha’i Blogcast with Rainn Wilson. You may also remember her work from the movie poster for The Gardener. The details of Shirin’s pieces and the joyful stories they tell are so captivating to me that I really wanted to create an Images post that would shine a spotlight on them and only them. Shirin, gracious as ever, agreed to share some images of her work and to tell us about them. Below you’ll find a small gallery and a short interview. As brief as they are, I hope they leave you visually refreshed and renewed! Click here to continue.

#8 17 Majestic Photos of the Baha’i Gardens in Israel

The Baha’i World Centre in Haifa, Israel is home to vast terraced gardens, sloped magnificently down the side of Mount Carmel. Centred in these iconic gardens is the Shrine of the Bab, one of the twin manifestations of God that Baha’is follow. The shrine’s dome is covered in gold, and lights up at night to create a beautiful beacon on the mountainside. In the surrounding gardens and terraces are buildings of the Baha’i World Centre, including the seat of the Universal House of Justice, the supreme body of the worldwide Baha’i community.

Every year Baha’is from around the world visit the Shrine and other Baha’i holy places on pilgrimage, often taking photographs to remember their experiences. Thanks to the photographers of 500px, we’ve pulled together some of the most stunning photographs from these magical gardens and buildings. Click here to continue.

#6 The Sun of Baha Has Set: Images of Bahji

Every year, Baha’is around the world commemorate the Ascension of Baha’u’llah that occurred on May 29, 1892. Shoghi Effendi masterfully penned this description of what followed in the hours after dawn on that historic day:

The news of His ascension was instantly communicated to Sultan Abdu’l-Hamid in a telegram which began with the words “the Sun of Baha has set” and in which the monarch was advised of the intention of interring the sacred remains within the precincts of the Mansion, an arrangement to which he readily assented. Baha’u’llah was accordingly laid to rest in the northernmost room of the house which served as a dwelling-place for His son-in-law, the most northerly of the three houses lying to the west of, and adjacent to, the Mansion. His interment took place shortly after sunset, on the very day of His ascension.

The gallery below features images taken by Negeen Sobhani from dusk to dawn of the Mansion of Bahji, the Shrine of Baha’u’llah and its surrounding gardens. Click here to continue.

#2 9 Breathtaking Photos from the Baha’i World Centre

The Baha’i World Center in Israel is the spiritual and administrative heart of our Faith. So it’s no surprise that images of the Holy places are always popular with Baha’is around the world. In fact our previous post of images from the Baha’i gardens is one of our most viewed. When I recently stumbled upon Californian photographer Dana Allen’s gorgeous gallery of images from a 2013 trip to Haifa I was particularly excited. They are not only beautiful photos, but also some of the more unique that I’ve come across in their treatment and view. Dana’s graciously consented to us showcasing a set here.
